Charlemagne, Charles the Large one (768-814), subjects revolted Aquitaine, removes in Lombards half of Italy, from which it is made a kingdom (774), reached the Arabs in Spain, converts of force to Christianity the Saxon ones and their Witikind chief after a long resistance, seizes Bavaria, subjects to a tribute all the people close to his borders, and pushes back the invasion of Avars from Asia.
Its States extend from Ebre and Garigliano in Elba and Theiss.
