France is saved by two great victories: victory of Zürich, where Masséna beats Souvarow and forces it with the retirement (September 1799); victory of Bergen, where Brune beats the English and the force to be re-embarked (October 1799).
At the same time the news of the victory of Aboukir arrives, where Bonaparte rejected the Turks with the sea.
Russia withdraws fight.
At the interior the Directory is always without force and prestige; two new coups d'etat took place since the 18 fructidor, one the 22 floréal (May 1798), the other the 30 meadow one (June 1799): France is tired of disorder.
CONSULATE
Bonaparte, income of Egypt, benefit from the situation to make in its turn the coup d'etat of the 18 brumaire (November 9, 1799): the Directory makes place with the Consulate, which has Republic only the name.
There is no more national representation, and all the authority is concentrated with the hands of the first consul.
